An interesting eastern issue of Antiochos III
Lot 1598
SELEUKID KINGS OF SYRIA. Antiochos III ‘the Great’, 222-187 BC. AE (Bronze, 17 mm, 3.94 g, 12 h), uncertain mint in the East. Diademed head of Antiochos III to right. Rev. [ΒΑ]Σ[ΙΛΕΩΣ] - [ΑΝ]ΤΙΟΧΟ[Υ] Apollo seated left on omphalos, holding arrow in his right hand and resting his left on grounded bow. SC -. Two edge cracks, otherwise, very fine.

While the ruler's portrait on this intriguing bronze coin must certainly be that of Antiochos III, the lack of controls or monograms makes it difficult to assign to a particular mint. Still, the bevelled edge is very reminiscent of certain eastern issues (such as those of the early Seleukids in Baktria) and thus, this coin most likely has an eastern origin as well.
